Medina of Tunis

What is Medina of Tunis?

The Medina of Tunis is a historic district located in the capital of Tunisia. It is one of the oldest parts of Tunis and is known for its maze-like streets, ancient architecture, mosques, and cultural landmarks. Today, it’s a bustling neighborhood with numerous shops called souks, restaurants, and markets, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists. In addition, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

History of Medina of Tunis

Old Medina has a long and vivid history, so not to make it too long, I will share only a couple of main points.

  • During the Roman period, Tunis was known as Carthage and was an important trading port. After the fall of the Roman Empire, various Arab and Berber dynasties ruled the city. Also, Medina grew in size and importance as a center of commerce and culture.
  • The walls and gates of Medina were built in the 8th century. And these walls still define Medina’s boundaries today. Also, the Zitouna Mosque was built around this period but was completely rebuilt in the 9th century.
  •  Tunis was a significant center of learning and scholarship, and Medina was home to several prestigious universities and madrasas. Madrasa is a term for a school or educational institution that typically focuses on Islamic studies. Still, nowadays, Medina is home to more than 20 madrasas.
  • Merchants from all over the Mediterranean region came to buy and sell goods in the Medina’s markets.
  • In the 16th century, Tunis was conquered by the Ottoman Empire, and in the 19th and 20th centuries, Tunis became a French protectorate. Through these years, Medina underwent significant changes but remained an important cultural and commercial center, and many of its historic buildings and landmarks were restored and preserved.

Where is Medina of Tunis?

The Medina of Tunis is in the capital of Tunisia, also called Tunis. Situated in the heart of the city and surrounded by the modern neighborhoods of the city. The Medina covers an area of about 270 hectares (3 km2). It’s easy to reach by foot. Walk by the Habib Bourguiba, and when you see the city gate called Bab El Bhar, you know that you have arrived at the entrance of Medina.

Practical tips for your visit

  • The best time to visit the Old Medina of Tunis is in the morning as there are fewer people, and the temperature is more pleasant.
  • Most of the shops are closed on Sundays and Friday afternoons.
  • The area is empty in the evenings. ( Except during Ramadan when it’s full of people in the evenings and nights)
  • The narrow streets of Medina resemble a maze. Download the Google map of the area for offline use.
  • You can easily spend a day or two in Medina, but I wouldn’t book a hotel for one week.

Things to do in Medina of Tunis

You can easily spend hours wandering around the narrow street of Medina and admire countless soaks and unique architecture, charming restaurants, and cafes. But if you are looking for inspiration on how to spend your day, here’s a little list of things to do in Medina.

Visit Zitouna Mosque

Zitouna Mosque is the largest mosque in Tunisia and one of the oldest in North Africa. It dates back to the 8th century and is considered a masterpiece of Islamic architecture. This absolutely gorgeous mosque is in the heart of Tunis Medina. Non-Muslims have a right to visit only the courtyard, but it is definitely worth visiting. This place has an amazingly peaceful atmosphere, which makes it a great escape from the hectic Medina. Remember to dress correctly for the Mosque visit. Tip: women need to cover their hair. At the entrance, you find boutiques where you can borrow a scarf.

Shopping in Medina

Wander around and enjoy the joyful atmosphere. This is also a perfect place to buy souvenirs, as Medina is home to countless little boutiques called souks. From the souks, you can look for beautiful hand-made Tunisian products such as carpets, poufs, fabrics, spices, pastries, leather products, jewelry, and clothes. Read my previous post about the 13 products to buy from Tunisia if you need some inspiration. Most importantly, you “must” bargain when buying something. I know that bargaining might feel unpleasant if you are not used to it. But go for it, as it’s a part of Tunisian culture.

Cultural activities in Medina

Are you looking for a palace to visit in the Medina of Tunis? Dar Bach Hamba is an old palace estimated to be built in the 17th century. It is in the southern part of Medina, about 500 meters away from the city gate of Bab El Bhar. The palace is nowadays a cultural center organizing art exhibitions.

Have a walk along the Rue de la Kasbah. This street is one of the most important in the Medina, and it’s lined with historic buildings and landmarks, including the Tunisian government palace.

Bab El Bhar is a city gate and the main entrance to Medina. Before, this city gate was attached to the surrounding walls. The walls don’t exist anymore, but the city gate still stands.

Relax in a hammam

Hammam, also known as the Turkish bath, is a type of bathhouse and steam room. First, enjoy the heat of the steam room, and then the attendant will scrub your whole body with the exfoliating glove to remove all the skin cells. You will feel super clean and relaxed after the hammam ritual. There are several hammams in the Medina. I highly encourage you to visit these traditional bathhouses as it will be a unique experience, and you will feel amazing afterward. Do you want to know more about Hammams? Check out this guide.

Restaurants in Medina

The Medina of Tunis is a great place to explore traditional Tunisian cuisine. It’s known for its rich flavors, spiciness, and unique blend of Mediterranean, Arab, and Berber influences. For example, restaurants Fondouk El Attarine, Dar El Jeld, and Dar Slah are fantastic spots for trying Tunisian food.

In addition to restaurants, there are many amazing Tunisian street food vendors. It’s the perfect opportunity to eat Slata Mechouai – grilled green pepper salad, Keftaji – grilled vegetables smashed with fried egg, Brik – a deep-fried and crispy pastry often filled with tuna, potato, onion, parsley, cheese, and egg, and Mlawi sandwich.

Is your stomach full yet? I hope not! Medina’s must-tries are freshly baked Makroudh, Tunisian hloa, and fruit or Nutella tarts.

Makroudh is a sweet pastry filled with date, fig, or almond paste, fried until golden brown, and soaked in syrup. Tunisian hloa means Tunisian candy. It’s the general name for nougat, halkoum (similar to Turkish delight), and roasted peanut bars. A box of Tunisian hloa makes a great souvenir to take home! Nearby the Zitouna Mosque is a small bakery that sells delicious fruit and Nutella tarts. I advise you to go to this bakery early as sometimes these delights are sold out.

In addition, The Medina is a great spot to try traditional mint tea served in small glass cups and refreshing lemonade. A perfect place to try these is a Panoramic cafe where you can also enjoy a beautiful view over Tunis. To enter there, you need to find a rug/carpet store, as the stairs up to the cafe are inside the store. Type Cafe Souk in google maps to find the rug store.
