The National Bardo Museum is the best museum and the top tourist attraction in Tunis. So definitely, visit the Bardo if you are a first-time visitor to Tunis. If the museums are your thing. Make a note to visit these four very different kinds of museums on your next trip.

The National Bardo Museum

The National Bardo Museum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Tunis. Actually, it has been listed in the first place on Tripadvisors’ list of things to do in Tunis. The Bardo has an impressive collection of mosaics and sculptures. In addition, you will get to know the history of Carthage.

The National Bardo Museum is the best in Tunis, so be sure to add it to your to-do list. The museum is located next to the Tunisian parliament. About five kilometers away from Tunis city center.

Important to note that the museum is now closed (May 2022) as the Tunisian parliament is also closed. The situation seems challenging. We can only hope that this beautiful museum opens its doors soon. challenging.

Carthage National Museum

Carthage National Museum is an archaeological museum located on the top of Byrsa Hill in the city of Carthage. About a 20-minute drive from the center of Tunis to the museum. This museum is for a person interested in the Carhages’ history. The museum has an impressive collection of historical items. Covering the Punic, Roman, and Byzantine periods of Carthage.

The Carthage National Museum is located near the Cathedral of Saint-Louis and the ruins of Carthage. These are also worth visiting. When you get in this area, I advise exploring everything you are interested in. A day should be enough for exploring everything.

National Military Museum

This is the museum to visit if you are interested in learning about Tunisian military history and conflicts. The museum covers the history of old times, the Arab-Islamic conquest, the time of the Hafside dynasty, and Ottoman governors. As well as the periods of the dynasties Muradid and Husainid.
The National Military Museum was built in 1793. It’s located in Manouba, about a 12 kilometers drive from the Tunis city center.

Maison de l'Image

Actually, I could have put Maison de l’Image on the list of art galleries as it’s not exactly a museum. Maison de l’Image is an independent space and community for visual arts. The place includes a training and co-working space, an exhibition hall, and a cultural exchange area. The community is very active and takes part in organizing events. So, keep an eye on their social media pages.

This is definitely the place to visit. Especially, if you are interested in art and seeing the artworks of new artists. Maison de l’Image is found in Mutuelleville close to Belvedere park.
